Standards
- BS EN12209 is the European standard for lock cases and is the recognised way of demonstrating that a lock is suitable for use on a fire door. Wide ranging in its scope in its testing and applications the classification achieved is given for each product separately.
- BS8300 and Approved Document M of the building regulations recommends that locks should have a minimum backset of 55mm and that the handle to keyway centres should be a minimum of 72mm.
- BS3621: 2007 is the minimum standard for locks on external or entrance doors to be acceptable to the Association of British Insurers and the police service.
Consideration should be given when selecting your lock or latch to the door furniture which is to be fitted to it, as many examples are supplied un-sprung and will require a stronger spring within the lock or latch to retain the furniture in a horizontal position.
